How to Calculate Slope Percentage

You can calculate slope percentage using the rise and run values.

Use this formula:

  • Slope (%) = (Rise ÷ Run) × 100

For a rise of 5 m and a run of 20 m:

  • Slope (%) = (5 ÷ 20) × 100 = 25%

Therefore, the slope is 25%.

A higher percentage indicates a steeper slope, while a lower percentage represents a gentler slope.

Can Slope Percentage Be Greater Than 100%?

Yes. A slope can be greater than 100% when the rise is larger than the run.

For example, with a rise of 15 m and a run of 10 m:

  • Slope (%) = (15 ÷ 10) × 100 = 150%

A 100% slope has equal rise and run. Any slope with a greater rise than run will have a percentage above 100%.

How Do You Convert Slope Percentage to Angle (Degrees)?

Slope percentage and slope angle describe the same slope in different forms. Percentage compares rise with run, while degrees represent the angle between the slope and the horizontal line.

The angle is calculated using:

  • Angle = arctan(Rise ÷ Run)

For a rise of 5 m and a run of 20 m:

  • Angle = arctan(5 ÷ 20) = arctan(0.25) ≈ 14.04° 

So, a 25% slope has an angle of approximately 14.04 degrees.

How Do You Express Slope as a Ratio?

A slope ratio compares the rise with the run and is often written as 1:n, where 1 represents the rise and n represents the horizontal distance.

For a rise of 5 m and a run of 20 m:

  • 5: 20

Divide both values by 5:

  • 1: 4

Therefore, the slope ratio is 1:4. This means the surface rises 1 unit for every 4 units of horizontal distance.

How Do You Calculate Slope Length?
